Vijay Ghate is recognised as one of the most brilliant and exciting Tabla players of the present generation. He is a God-gifted Tabla Nawaz. His fingers express all unmatched sounds of the Universe. His physical and mental being is nothing but an ocean of rhythm. Playing Tabla is not only his passion but it is his religion. He is an ardent “Saadhak” of this instrument.
Vijay Ghate was born on 18th October, in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh. He started learning table at the age of 3. He acquired degree of Visharad in Tabla at the age of 12. He received scholarship in National Talent from Government institute of New Delhi at the age of 15. When he was 16 he moved to Mumbai,and for over twelve years he put himself under the tutelage of Taalyogi Pandit Suresh Talwalkar in Gurukul pattern.
Even at the age of 16 he became well-known for his scintillating solo performances. He has been accompanying many music maestros of India and abroad. His adept and enthusiastic accompaniment has made him favourite of many of India’s renowned classical musicians. He is one of the few tabla players who are proficient in playing in all the three streams of Music (Vocal, Instrumental and Dance).
Vijay Ghate has a quickfire anticipation filled with a very creative mind and imagination, clarity in playing, dexterity and accuracy are his forte. He has been accompanying many well-known artists like Ustad Bismillah Khan, Ustad Vilayat Khan, Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia, Ustad Amjad Ali Khan, Pandit Shiv Kumar Sharma, Pandit Birju Maharaj, Pandit Jasraj, Ustad Shahid Parvez, and many others all over the world. He has performed with some of the top ranked international artists across the globe. He has been very well acknowledged for his forays into fusion in the world of music with well-known artists from the western world like famous group Jethrotul and great maestros in easy Jazz like George Dukes, Aljereu, Ravi Coltarin, and also frequently working with Egberto Gismonti, Larry Coryell, George Brooks, etc. He has also collaborated with well-known Indian musicians in this field like Louis Banks, Shankar Mahadevan, Hariharan, Shivmani etc. He has been a part of lot of Carnatic fusion music with Dr.L.Subramanium, Vidhwan Vikku Vinayakram, M.S. Gopalkrishnan and U. Srinivas. Vijay Ghate has been one of the visiting faculties at Codarts University of Arts at Rotterdam.
Vijay Ghate has formed a trust call Taalchakra, which provides platform to young and upcoming artists and also supports the musicians in financially weaker conditions. This trust plans to conduct music workshops by veteran musicians and plans to start pension scheme for musicians and music teachers who are in financially weaker conditions. Taalchakra mainly promotes classical music and dance. Taalchakra has successfully staged a rich variety of events in different parts of the country.
Vijay Ghate has performed at India-france festival in Paris (1984), Indian festival in Russia (1985), Rashtrapati Bhavan as well as Parliament house, New Delhi and Bharat Bhavan Bhopal. He frequently travels in USA, Europe, Middle East and Asia for series of concerts. He has showcased his exemplary skill at various festivals like Sawai Gandharva Sangeet Mahotsava, Pune, Harvallabh Sangeet Mahotsava, Jalandhar, Tansen Samaroh Gwalior, Gunidas Sammelan Mumbai, Ustd Alladiya Khan Sangeet Samaroh Mumbai, Kalidas Festival Nagpur, Khajuraho Festival, Vishnu Digambar Sangeet Utsav New Delhi. He has released an album titled ‘Vijay’ by sense world music. Vijay Ghate is a receipent of Pt. Jasraj Puraskar, Saraswati Bai Rane Puraskar, and Dr. Vasantrao Deshpande Puraskar and Padmashri in 2014.
